Datamotive uses a per-workload subscription model. Each protected VM, cloud instance, or physical server counts as one workload seat.

Seat counting

A seat is consumed when a workload is added to an active protection or migration plan. Workloads that are discovered but not yet placed in a plan do not consume seats.

What counts as one seat:

  • One VMware virtual machine
  • One Nutanix AHV virtual machine
  • One Amazon EC2 instance
  • One Azure VM
  • One Google Compute Engine instance

What does not count separately:

  • Multiple disks attached to the same VM (they count as one seat)
  • Shadow VMs created at the DR target (these are not managed workloads)
  • Replication Appliance or Cloud Connector VMs deployed by Datamotive itself

Activating a license

  1. Obtain your license key

Request a license key from your Datamotive account team or retrieve it from the Datamotive partner portal. Trial keys are available from the datamotive.io website without contacting sales.

  2. Open the control plane

Log in to the Datamotive console. Navigate to Settings and then Licensing.

  3. Enter the license key

Paste the license key into the License key field and click Activate. For air-gapped environments, use the offline activation flow described below.

  4. Verify seat allocation

After activation, the Licensing page shows the number of purchased seats, seats in use, and the license expiration date.

Offline activation (sovereign and air-gapped)

For deployments with no outbound internet access:

  1. On the Licensing page, click Generate activation request. This creates a signed request file.
  2. Transfer the request file to a machine with internet access.
  3. Upload the file to the Datamotive activation portal and download the activation response file.
  4. Transfer the response file back to the air-gapped environment and upload it on the Licensing page.

License enforcement

When all seats are consumed, adding new workloads to a plan is blocked. Existing protected workloads continue to replicate uninterrupted. To add more workloads, either remove an existing workload from its plan or purchase additional seats.

Renewal

Datamotive sends renewal reminders at 90, 60, and 30 days before expiration. Contact your account team or renew through the partner portal. License keys for renewals are applied using the same activation flow as new licenses.
